John Robert “Jack” Reading died Sunday, June 5, 2016, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. He was born Sept. 13, 1932, to John Robert and Fawn (McMillan) Reading in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the oldest of three boys.
He grew up in Salt Lake City. He attended the University of Utah where he became a member of ROTC. After graduation he received a commission in the Air Force. He was married for time and eternity to Anne Davies in the Salt Lake temple on June 9, 1954. He served in Korea for a year, and left the Air Force in 1961 with the rank of Captain. As a civilian he worked with computers originally as a programmer and then in sales for UNIVAC before retiring from Digital.
After retiring he moved to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, with his wife, Anne. He spent his time with various activities, including fishing, woodworking and helping others. He was a volunteer reservist with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. He was very involved with the Community Library Network. He served as an active member of the board and as treasurer until his death.
He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He had many callings including a bishop’s counselor, bishop, high counselor and as a counselor in a stake presidency, and many more callings. He loved his callings as scout master and as a primary teacher. He was an ordinance worker in the Seattle Temple for nine years and was in the first temple presidency of the Spokane Temple. He served a temple mission with Anne in Nauvoo, Ill. He continued serving as a sealer until shortly before his death.
He is survived by his wife, Anne; and his four children, Cynthia (Michael) Adams, Jeanne (Doyle) Heath, John Daniel (Delkys) Reading and Paul Timothy (Kim) Reading; 12 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Neal (Petra) Reading and Bruce (Maureen) Reading. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Richard Thomas Adams.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 11, 2016, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2293 W. Hanley Ave., Coeur d’Alene. Viewing will be at 10 a.m. with service to follow at 11 a.m. Bell Tower Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
