For the first time this year, all 50 miles of Glacier National Park’s Going-to-the-Sun Road are clear of snow and ice, but remaining work will push the Logan Pass opening date into next week at the earliest.

“The road’s not opening this weekend,” park spokeswoman Margie Steigerwald said Thursday.

Plows near Logan Pass finished scraping the last 18-inch crust of ice from the pavement earlier this week. But workers still need to install about three quarters of the scenic highway’s 426 temporary guardrails and clear away debris left behind by a series of avalanches that struck Sun Road two weeks ago, she said.

One of the avalanches also blasted through about 60 feet of stone masonry near the Rim Rock, which will require a temporary guardrail to be put in place.

Unlike last year, no construction work is planned for Sun Road, meaning cars will be able to drive across its full extent when the vehicle closures at Avalanche and Jackson Glacier Overlook are lifted.

Some delays are likely at St. Mary, where the entrance station will be under construction this year. Vehicles will detour through the adjacent St. Mary Visitor Center parking lot.

All other roads in the park are fully open, with the exception of the Inside North Fork Road, which for years has been affected by repeated flooding events.
