POST FALLS — The Northern Lakes Mountaineers finished 3-1 at the School’s Out Tournament on Sunday at Post Falls High, capped by a 9-0 victory over the Kennewick (Wash.) Dusters.

Max Baker went 3 for 3 and J.J. Mackesy drove in three runs for Northern Lakes (4-2).

“All the kids hit very well the past four games and in those we scored 40 runs,” Northern Lakes coach Al Bevacqua said. “As a team they have been hitting very well — their approaches are excellent, and defense and pitching are right there with it.”

In earlier tourney action, Northern Lakes lost 8-0 to the Club Spokane Dodgers 17-and-under squad, then beat Moses Lake 21-6 and Mt. Spokane 11-2.

Against Moses Lake, Ryan Pote went 3 for 4 with four RBIs and two runs scored for Northern Lakes, and Joe Strietzel was 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs and three runs.

Northern Lakes returns to action Tuesday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader vs. the Spokane Bandits at Gorton Field in Rathdrum.

Prairie’s final

tourney game

cancelled

POST FALLS — Prairie’s final game of the School’s Out Tournament, vs. the Spokane Expos on Sunday, was cancelled.

Prairie will play the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen today in a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Thorco Field in Coeur d’Alene.

On Saturday, Prairie picked up its first win of the year, beating the Orofino Merchants 4-3, before falling to the Missoula Prospects 11-7 at the School’s Out Tournament at Post Falls High.

Brock Zeller pitched a three-hitter against Orofino for Prairie (1-6), allowing three unearned runs and striking out four. Tanner Call went 2 for 2, including a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to score Dusty Weeks.

“It was a great feeling to get our first win of the season,” Prairie coach Brian Fowler said. “I thought our team came out with much improved focus from the previous day.”

Against Missoula, Jerrett Plunkett went 3 for 4 for the Cardinals.

“I thought our team battled well throughout the game,” Fowler said. “In the end we just made a few too many mistakes to beat ourselves.”

On Friday, Prairie opened the tourney with a 14-6 loss to Miles City (Mont.).

Tanner Call went 2 for 3 with two RBIs for the Cardinals, in a game shortened to four innings due to a tourney time limit.

“Steady rain made for less than ideal playing conditions, but our team has to learn to play through these types of adversity if we want to be successful,” Fowler said. “Seventeen walks is not something that our pitching staff can do if we want to put ourselves in position to win a ballgame.”
