SPIRIT LAKE — Police are calling it a "high-speed burnout."

Joshua J. Cecil, 28, Blanchard, was arrested early Monday morning after allegedly trying to drive his 2013 Harley-Davidson motorcycle through the front sliding doors of Miller's Harvest Foods in Spirit Lake.

"When officers arrived, he was spinning out trying to drive through the front doors," Spirit Lake Police Chief Keith Hutcheson said. "Smoke was pouring out from under the tires. It was a high-speed burnout."

Hutcheson said Cecil didn't make it inside the grocery at 31964 N. Fifth Ave. but caused severe damage to the sliding doors. The business was not open at 2:36 a.m. when the alleged incident occurred and no one was inside.

"Luckily the business was closed," Hutcheson said. "It could have been a lot worse."

A representative of the store told police the damage to the doors was estimated at $10,000.

"It bent in the aluminum sliding doors," Hutcheson said, adding it appears intoxication was a factor in the incident and officers could smell alcohol.

Carol Miller, whose husband Kevin owns the store, said the business opened at 7 a.m. as usual on Monday.

"We'll have to replace the sliders," she said. "It appears he really pushed on that door. I'm not sure what would cause someone to do something like that. I don't get it."

Miller said neighbors heard the ruckus and called police and Kevin.

"The officers (Ben Kirkendall and Dennis Sanchez) pulled up behind him while he was doing it, so he was caught red-handed," Hutcheson said.

Cecil was allegedly verbally uncooperative with the officers before he was arrested and booked into jail on malicious injury to property charges.
