Flathead County sheriff’s deputies have arrested two suspects on homicide charges after discovering the body of a young man in a creek east of Creston on Monday.
Robert Wittal, 29, of Kalispell was arrested Monday night on a felony charge of deliberate homicide and is being held in the Flathead County Detention Center.
Flathead County Undersheriff Dave Leib confirmed Tuesday night that a second suspect, also from Kalispell, was being detained in connection with the suspected murder, but declined to provide further details.
Wittal was arrested after law enforcement was informed Monday morning about a possible murder that may have occurred over Memorial Day weekend, according to Leib.
Detectives searched an area approximately four miles up the Peters Creek Road and found the body of a young man in a creek under a log.
An initial investigation indicated that he had been stabbed multiple times.
Wittal already had a bench warrant out for his arrest for failure to appear in court on previous charges when deputies arrested him for the homicide charge.
According to court documents, on Dec. 16, 2015, Wittal was arrested for possession of methamphetamine and for carrying concealed weapons without a permit.
Sheriff’s deputies approached Wittal near Scotty’s Bar off U.S. 93. After talking with Wittal, the deputies learned Wittal already had warrants out for his arrest. When asked if he had any weapons, Wittal said he had a firearm under his shirt and tucked into his blue jeans. He didn’t have a concealed permit for the gun.
Wittal was released on May 3 this year with his arraignment set for June 2, but he did not show up in court. His next arraignment was scheduled June 9, which he also missed.
A bench warrant for his arrest was issued June 13, the same day he was arrested on the charge of deliberate homicide.
The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of relatives.
