Two Kalispell math students — Flathead High School sophomore Jelisa Holmquist and Glacier High School junior Silas Schwarz — swept the top spots at the state-level Trig-Star math contest with perfect scores.

Holmquist placed first by finishing the test in the shortest amount of time and will compete at the national level this month. Schwarz placed second.

As chapter and state winner, Holmquist was awarded an HP engineering calculator, $500 and a scholarship for $1,250. Silas won $100 and a $1,000 scholarship.

Twenty-nine Montana schools and more than 600 students participated. In this math competition, students are given four trigonometry problems to solve in under 60 minutes. The math problems apply to the surveying profession.

The National Society of Professional Surveyors and the Montana Association of Registered Land Surveyors sponsor Trig-Star.
