When festivities kick off at the Play 60 Challenge on Saturday, there will be winners of 14 Super Bowl rings, two NFL Hall of Famers and a host of local dignitaries will be out to spread the message of a healthy lifestyle to kids of all ages.
Hosted by Doug Betters’ For The Children Inc. and Candy Bar Ranch, with help from Kalispell Regional Medical Center, the event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Glacier High School. There is no charge for admission, though donations are appreciated, with all proceeds going to help For The Children, a nonprofit that helps Montana families facing pediatric medical issues with travel expenses.
Headlining the list of former NFL players at the event will be Hall of Famers Jerry Rice and Ronnie Lott, and San Francisco 49ers teammates Roger Craig and Dwight Clark. Whitefish resident Grey Ruegamer, a two-time Super Bowl champion most recently with the New York Giants in 2008, joins a list of players from Montana, including Lex Hilliard, Dane Fletcher and Chase Reynolds. Former University of Montana quarterback and Glacier High School alum Shay Smithwick-Hann and Griz mascot Monte will also attend.
Glacier coach Grady Bennett and the Wolfpack will help with events as will Hilliard and members of the Flathead football team.
The event will feature football among other activities to teach kids about the importance of a healthy lifestyle, including exercise, nutrition and hygiene.
“It’s a great lifestyle to start now,” Betters said. “Get good habits, exercise, eating, hygiene, the whole thing. Nutrition is a big part of what KMRC is trying to do. The old adage, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of treatment. We want to try to get that message out.
“We’ve been at it for awhile and had a lot of fun with it. The guys are just big kids anyway. When it comes down to it they have a lot of fun playing with the kids and interacting with them.”
Due to time restraints, there will not be an autograph or photo session, but there will be raffle prizes and other giveaways at the event.
Betters, now confined to a wheelchair after breaking his neck in a skiing accident, says getting kids to run around and be active is important at a young age.
“Now in my situation where I no longer can do that, you definitely miss it,” Betters said. “There’s some things that you can do from a wheelchair, but it’s not something you should take for granted. When you’re young you should get out there and play. If you start early with that mindset and that constitution, you’ll take it on for the rest of your life. You can live long and prosper that way.”
