A 26-year-old man from the Essex area was airlifted Friday to Kalispell Regional Medical Center after his truck went off U.S. 2 near mile marker 156 near West Glacier.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene at 11:34 a.m. Friday and located the truck 250 feet from the road.
The injured driver, however, wasn’t found until two hours later.
The man had sustained a neck injury — possibly a neck fracture — and had wandered away from the scene of the crash and was walking down the highway when he flagged down help, according to Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Laramie Stefani.
The man was reportedly in and out of consciousness at the time of his rescue, but Stefani said he later regained consciousness and the trooper talked to the driver in an attempt to get more information about how the crash occurred.
“He doesn’t remember a thing,” Stefani said. “We’re still putting the pieces together.”
“It was quite an impressive distance from the road. I don’t think I’ve seen anything like that before,” Stefani said.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
Emergency responders included West Glacier and Martin City fire departments and the ALERT helicopter from Kalispell.
