ROYAL CITY — Royal High junior Maggie Delay continues to add to her stellar athletic accomplishments.

At Arlington the weekend of June 4-5, Delay came from behind on the second day to win the state decathlon going away. She scored 4,781 points to the 4,446 points of Richland’s McCall Redden.

The top eight included girls from Tumwater, Kamiak and Cascade of Everett and three girls from Lakewood.

The meet is known as the Dennis McDonald Multi Events State Championships. This was the 45th year. It is a United States of America Track and Field-sanctioned event. The USATF is the national governing body for all things track and field.

“We figured she would be a good candidate as she is an all around good athlete,” Royal Track Coach Scott Sandberg said. “It’s a two-day competition in which the athlete does five events on day 1 and five events on day 2.”

Winning is not based on how you place in each event but by an established scoring scale for your mark in each event. The scores from each event are combined for the overall score.

Delay was in a close third place overall, with fewer than 100 points separating her from the leader, after the first day. On the second day she outscored the field to accumulate enough points to move her into first with a better than 300-point cushion.

“So, needless to say, Maggie is the Washington State Girls Decathlon Champion,” Sandberg said.

Day One

• 100 meter dash - 2nd, 13.17.
• Discus - 8th, 59-6.
• Pole Vault - 1st, 9-6.
• Javelin - 5th, 70-11.
• 400 meter dash - 3rd, 1:06.34

Day two

• 100 meter hurdles - 1st, 15.22
• Long Jump - 2nd, 16-0.50.
• Shot Put - 7th, 22-8.
• High Jump - 3rd, 4-3.25.
• 1500 meter run - 5th, 6:22.37.
