MATTAWA — The City of Mattawa continues to rise in the annual listing of Washington’s safest cities by SafeWise.com.
Mattawa holds the No. 3 ranking, based on 2014 crime statistics. It was 16th two years ago and ninth last year.
Only cities of 3,000 or more populations are considered. The rankings are based on reported violent crimes and property crimes to the FBI.
According to Mattawa Police Chief John Turley, Mattawa started to become a safer city about a year his arrival, and he credits others more than himself.
According to Turley, city government has made a commitment to an adequate police force. Meanwhile, his officers are good practitioners of community policing. And residents are generally helpful during crime investigations.
The result of all of that is less crime, he said.
