COEUR d’ALENE — The organizers of Car d'Lane try to avoid giving any one car two awards, but when it comes to the People's Choice Award, it is out of their hands.

The winner of the 2016 People's Choice, a 1932 Ford Coupe owned by Jon and Kali Budda, also won an award for Best Modified from the 1930s. All the other awards, ranging from Longest Road Trip to Old School Hot Rod, were given to individual recipients.

"A lot of the men and women in this hobby put a lot of work into their cars," said Emily Boyd, event coordinator with the Coeur d’Alene Downtown Association, adding that many have special stories behind their cars. "So when they get recognized for their car it's special to them."

The Car d'Lane awards, sponsored by Gerber Collision and Glass, are given out each year in order to recognize that hard work, dedication and love those men and women have for their cars.

"The people that own these cars spend a lot of time and money on these cars, so to be recognized as an outstanding member of the car community, and that's what this is, then they feel very honored," said Marcia Saunders, member of the North Idaho Classic Car Club.

NICCC partners with the Downtown Association to host the event each year. Caren Easterly, NICCC member, said the award recipients are "picked," so it is not done by judging. A group of club members go around and "use their best judgment" to decide who the winners are.

Easterly said the event went well despite the threat of rain for Saturday. And as the rain began to come down about 2 p.m., the cars and foot traffic began to clear out, causing the awards that were scheduled for 4 p.m. to be announced early.

The official tally of cars was not in as of Saturday, but Saunders estimated about 800 cars participated in the cruise Friday evening and about 375 parked for Saturday's Show and Shine.

Boyd said she is not a big car person, but coming to the Car d'Lane event she has noticed that the cars are not just cars.

"They are memories they've taken their kids home in, they've taken their bride away after they got married, they drove to their honeymoon — they have memories with their family in them," Boyd said.

Easterly said it is also neat to see people come back each year and get to know each other.

"There is so many car clubs around it gets to be like a big family, so it's nice to see somebody in your family win something from other car clubs, other cities, other states — it's cool," Easterly said. "It's really a good way to get to know people."
