QUINCY — Two people were sent to jail, and a citizen’s $5,500 zero-turn John Deere mower was recovered after being stolen the morning of May 16 near Quincy.

Arrested were Daniel Amaya, 42, and Amanda Alcala, both of Quincy. Authorities were led to their residence on the suspicion of the mower’s owner that they were the culprits.

Grant County sheriff’s deputies served a search warrant at 8524 State Route 281 North, which is just south of the Quincy city limits. The warrant was the result of an investigation of a zero-turn lawn mower which was stolen from a home about six miles from Quincy.

The mower’s owner had a suspicion Amaya may have been involved in the theft. He had gone to Amaya’s property and, according to the sheriff’s office, found mower tracks in the dirt and then found the mower secreted under a camouflage cover.

Deputies, along with K-9 Grizzly, responded. Grizzly barked a few times and coaxed Amaya out of the house.

Amaya was jailed for investigation of First degree possession of stolen property, outstanding warrant for third degree the and outstanding warrant for possession of methamphetamine.

Alcala was also in the home. She came out but was combative with deputies. She was jailed for investigation of third degree assault, resisting arrest, possession of methamphetamine and obstructing a law enforcement officer

“The person whose mower was stolen did a great job of letting us know what had happened and where his mower was, allowing us to take action and arrest two people in this case,” said Sheriff Tom Jones.
