A Hungry Horse driver died Saturday of blunt force trauma after striking another vehicle from behind shortly after midnight on U.S. 2 in Hungry Horse.

According to a Montana Highway Patrol report, Denver Ray Heffington, 31, was traveling west at high speed and failed to react to a truck slowing down to turn right near mile marker 143.

Alcohol is believed to have been involved in the accident, and a Monday press release from the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office noted that Heffington was wearing a seat belt.

Heffington was transported to Kalispell Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The other driver, a 52-year-old man, was injured in the accident, but refused medical attention.

Neither vehicle was carrying any passengers.
