The pilot who died in a plane crash in the backcountry on Saturday afternoon was identified on Monday as 70-year-old Kenneth D. Chapman, of Spokane.

Family notifications have been made.

Chapman had been flying alone in his 1966 Cessna 185 airplane when, for an unknown reason, he crashed into a thickly-wooded hillside near Horeshaven about 40 miles east of Coeur d'Alene, according to the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

A backcountry deputy and KCSO volunteer Search and Rescue personnel patrolling the area were within a mile of the crash scene and on scene within minutes of the report around 3 p.m.

Chapman, the sole occupant in the plane, was pronounced dead at the scene.

• Meanwhile, Terry L. Holman, 75, of Spokane, the pilot involved in a plane crash on Hayden Lake on Sunday afternoon, was in good condition at Kootenai Health on Monday.

According to the KCSO, Holman was attempting to land his 1978 fixed-wing Cessna float plane when he crashed into the lake near Chicken Point.

The plane flipped upside down in the water. Holman climbed out on his own and was brought to shore by boaters. The plane was towed to Holman's dock near the crash by the Northern Lakes Fire District.

The preliminary investigation indicates the cause of the crash was due to the dry landing gear being in the down position when he attempted to land in the water, causing the plane to flip.
