SANDPOINT — Part of the magic formula for making custom metal gates, signs and decorative art is having the right tools and knowing how to use them. Sandpoint Parks and Recreation Department has a class coming up where participants can catch hold of that magic and make something spectacular.

The class, "Intro to the CNC Plasma Cutter and Design," meets at the MakerPoint Studios, 1424 N Boyer Ave., Wednesday evenings from 6 p.m to 9 p.m. beginning June 29. Participants will learn how to operate the machine, which utilizes an electrical channel of extremely hot ionized gas — plasma — to cut designs in sheet metals.

The class is limited to six students. The cost for the class and materials is $71. City residents receive a $2 discount.

The city is also offering a CNC Router class in July at MakerPoint Studios.

"Participants will be taught the basics of running a CNC router, how to design projects for the machine using Vectric’s VCarve Pro software and some woodworking basics. All participants will design and take home their own 6 pack tote made on the CNC" according to the class description.

The class takes place July 6. The $71 registration fee includes project materials. Sandpoint city residents receive a $2 discount.
