BOYS BASKETBALL: Polson squeezes past Ponies, finishes 3rd at state tournament
The Daily Inter Lake | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 9 years AGO
MISSOULA — The Polson Pirates capped of a successful season with a third-place finish Saturday evening at the Class A state boys basketball tournament at the University of Montana, narrowly beating Havre 66-65 in overtime in the consolation final.
In a back and forth contest with the Blue Ponies, Polson took the lead late in regulation, hitting a pair of baskets to pull ahead 52-49 with 58 seconds to play.
The teams traded free throws on the next two possessions, when with Polson still leading 54-51, Havre star Dane Warp sent the game to overtime on a deep 3-pointer with less than 10 seconds left.
In overtime, Polson took charge early, opening with a 9-4 run to pull out to a 63-58 lead. As he had the rest of the game, Warp would pull the Ponies back, slicing the Polson lead to 66-65 with less than a minute to play.
However, the Havre star couldn’t convert on a pair of free throws with 15 seconds to play, and after Polson missed two free throws of its own, Havre couldn’t get off a shot in the final seconds.
Jeremiah North Piegan and Matthew Rensvold both scored 18 points to lift the Pirates, North Piegan also corraling a game-high nine rebounds.
Payton Lefthand chipped in 11 points for the Pirates.
Warp knocked down 32 points and eight rebounds for Havre.
Polson opened the tournament on Thursday with a tough 47-43 loss to Billings Central. The Pirates bounced back to edge Hamilton 51-50 on Friday and advanced to the third-place game with a 64-56 win over Hardin earlier Saturday.
Against Hardin, the Pirates pulled ahead 40-26 after three quarters and cruised past Hardin. Rensvold scored 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Lefthand added 14 and Wilson chipped in 13.
Polson shot 48.7 percent in the game and forced the Bulldogs to shoot at a 34.7 percent clip. Hardin turned it over 17 times.
