School leader's contract extended for one year

Kalispell Public Schools Superintendent Mark Flatau’s contract was extended a year at a school board meeting Tuesday.
Flatau’s previous three-year contract went through June 2017 and will now extend through June 30, 2018. His salary will reflect what staffers receive — a 2 percent increase. Currently, Flatau is paid $132,737. A request to increase Flatau’s personal leave benefit from 10 to 13 days per year also was approved by trustees.
During Tuesday’s meeting, the use of personal emails for school board or district correspondence was also brought up.
Currently, and in the past, trustees have either used personal emails or district-assigned emails. For uniformity and to separate personal emails and official school board correspondences, trustees agreed to make a transition to using district-assigned email accounts for board- and district-related business.
Trustee Jack Fallon, who has served on the technology committee, and Flatau noted that in instances of public record requests or litigation, personal emails could also be open to scrutiny.
“You need to know if anything like that were to occur, your entire email database would be requested,” Flatau said.
