MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake boys tennis had a shot at upsetting Wenatchee after No. 1 singles player Canon Gregoire dispatched Tobi Butler 6-0, 6-1.

However, Moses Lake lost the next three singles matches and was edged 4-3 overall.

The loss evened the Chiefs’ record to 1-1 on the season.

The girls struggled and were swept 7-0.

Boys singles players David Hernandez, Brian Nguyen and Aditya Sharma lost their matches. Nguyen moved to 4-1 on the season. Moses Lake’s No. 2 doubles team of Garrett vance and Vaughn Koreis and No. 3 team of David Cardenas and James Zimmer picked up wins.

The Moses Lake girls lost all seven matches in straight sets and dropped to 0-2.

“Megan hill had a strong second set in her No. 2 singles match, dropping 6-1, then making the score tighter 6-3,” Richard Gregoire said. “We ran up against a very strong Wenatchee crew that doesn’t have many weaknesses. “They should be the favorite in league play.”

Moses Lake travels to the Lewiston Invite this weekend.

Baseball

Ephrata 6, Cascade 5

EPHRATA — Logan Moss pitched three innings with six strikeouts, helping Ephrata edge Cascade 6-5 in its season-opener.

The Tigers and the Kodiaks were schedule to play last weekend, but the game was washed out. Parker Ball recorded the save.

Tyler Lutz recorded one hit and stole three bases.

Ephrata travels to Prosser for a Saturday doubleheader.

Track and Field

Ephrata wins Icebreaker Meet handily

EPHRATA — Ephrata boys and girls track and field won the Icebreaker Meet by a comfortable margin.

On the boys’ side, Ephrata placed first with 269 points, Connell was second with 175 and Quincy came in third with 81. Wilson Creek and Soap Lake finished fourth and fifth with 19 and 10 points, respectively.

That same order made up the girls’ standings with Ephrata totaling 339 points.

Connell recorded 152, Quincy scored 33 and Soap Lake scored 17.

Quataveous Mason placed first in the 100 and 200 meters. The Ephrata boys won 10 events.

Haley Hovland won the 800 and 3200 meters for the girls.

Quincy 2, Wenatchee 1

WENATCHEE — Class 2A Quincy upset 4A Wenatchee on the road 2-1.

It was a dramatic turnaround from last year when Quincy lost 5-1.

The Jacks continue their non-league slate today, 6 p.m., at home against Chelan.
