OTHELLO — Huskie softball coach Rudy Ochoa thought his club was swinging the bats well during their pre-season practices.
Saturday, the club pounded the visiting East Valley Red Devils, sweeping a double-header 11-0 and 17-1 to join Selah, Ephrata and Ellensburg as undefeated in CWAC league play.
Madison Martinez scattered six hits in earning the opening game shut-out. East Valley threatened in four of the five innings, leaving eight runners on base, but the Red Devils were never able to pick up the key hit with runners in scoring position. Meanwhile, the Huskies put up 11 runs in the opener on 12 hits.
Mariah DeLeon, Kayleen Garza and Kirsten Quigley all hit doubles, Dominquez Martinez blasted a triple and a home run and Madison Martinez belted a grand slam home run to end the opening game early via the 10-run mercy rule.
Othello jumped on East Valley for 11 runs in the first inning of the nightcap. Haddassi Valdez, Madison Martinez and Nikki Martinez all hit home runs while Diamond Franco and Quigley were both 2x3 at the plate. Nikki Martinez had a perfect game ruined by East Valley’s Kaleigh Denton’s home run to lead off the fifth inning.
The Huskies travel to Ephrata (2-0) next Saturday in another key CWAC league double-header.
