SANDPOINT — Bonner Community Food Bank is undergoing a heart and soul transplant as executive director Alice Wallace cedes the torch to former assistant director Debbie Love.

Wallace accepted a temporary post at the food bank in 1997 as a fill-in for a staff member who was out for a month. The board asked her to stay on, and after nearly 20 years working in the facility, she will retire May 1.
"During Alice's tenure, the food bank evolved from having one box freezer to a walk-in freezer and two walk-in coolers," wrote Steve Temple, president of the board of directors, in a recent press release.
"I enjoyed every aspect of it," Wallace said. "I wasn't satisfied to just let it glide along. We added more things ... it just kept getting bigger and bigger."
Some of the things she gathered into the food bank's hold during the years include special holiday and children's programs.
