Legion baseball: Kalispell Lakers AA take 2 from Helena Senators

Kalispell Lakers AA never trailed in the opening game, but had to hang on for a 4-3 victory over the Helena Senators AA at Griffin Field on Sunday in nonconference American Legion baseball play.
Helena scored three times in the top of the seventh to make it close.
The Lakers trailed 6-0 in the second before storming back to pull out a 7-6 victory in the doubleheader. Helena walked in the game-winning run.
The Lakers scored three times in the bottom of the fifth and sixth to tie it.
Dawson Smith pitched six innings in the opener, allowing just four hits, striking out three and walking one batter to get the win for Kalispell.
Joe Broughton doubled, Haydn Schlepp tripled and Andrew Schleusner went 2 for 2 and Spencer Pisk was 2 for 3 to power the Lakers.
Schlepp and Micah Benson were both 2 for 3 in the second game. Schlepp had three RBIs.
Logan DeCock and Schlepp hit doubles in that outing.
DeCock picked up the win in the second game, pitching the final two innings. He gave up two hits and fanned two batters.
“Our pitchers have done a pretty good job pitching to contact,” Lakers coach Ryan Malmin said.
“Offensively, we did really well with runners in scoring position. Down 6-0, the kids responded, kept chipping away.”
The Lakers (9-2 overall) host the Mission Valley Mariners for a doubleheader on Saturday.

HELENA — The Helena Reps A rallied in both games to take the nonconference doubleheader from the Kalispell Lakers A (1-3).
The Lakers led 4-0 after three before falling in extra innings in the first game.
The Lakers took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning, when Helena scored three times to win the other contest.
Nathan Vanderbeek tripled for the Lakers in the first game while Jaycob Serrano went 2 for 3.
Sam Elliot pitched the final four innings.
In the second contest, Randy Stultz went 2 for 4 and Serrano was again 2 for 3.
Elliot doubled in that game.
The Lakers host the Missoula Mavericks A on Saturday for a doubleheader.

EUREKA — A three-run second inning helped carry the Kootenai Valley Rangers A to a victory over the Glacier Twins B (4-2).
Dawson Henrie, 1 for 3, drove in two runs for the Rangers.
Hank Dunn, 1 for 3, had the other RBI for Kootenai Valley.
Jared Reynolds, 2 for 3, was the leading hitter for Glacier.
Sam Hannay pitched 4 2/3 innings for the Rangers to pick up the win. He allowed four hits, walked two batters and struck out six.

Colten Parker went 2 for 2 along with Tom Hellwig for Glacier.
Derek Kastella, Parker and Wetsch all doubled once.
Parker also tripled.
Anthony Jones had a double and Walter Wood tripled for Mission Valley.
Glacier plays the Bitterroot Red Sox on Saturday in Hamilton.
