May 3, 1916 — CLARKSFORK BURGLARY
Burglars, evidently amateurs and home talent, broke into the N.P. depot Friday night, securing $50 by blowing up the safe and the next night entered the office of the Clarksfork Lumber co., getting only a small amount of cash for their trouble. Sheriff Remer is of the opinion that the burglars are Clarksfork residents, but further investigations have not led to sufficient evidence to warrant the arrest of suspected parties.

COMMITTEE TELLS HOW TO RETRENCH
Messrs. Robert S. McCrea, Eugene W. Sims and Arthur K. Bowden, the special committee appointed by the mayor to devise ways and means of curtailing the city’s expenses to offset the loss of the saloon license money, submitted its report to the city council last night. They advise a reduction of $5041.62 from last year’s operating expenses. Some of the proposals are:
City Hall Fund – We recommend consolidation of the position of Health Officer with that of Police Chief; also that further contribution to the band be discontinued, and that revenue be obtained from the band room in the city hall if possible.
Police Fund – We recommend the department be reduced to one officer, no allowance for uniforms, $25.00 only allowed for special police.
Streets and thoroughfares including dock – We recommend that this appropriation be increased $200 making the appropriation this year $1200.
We recommend cutting off any appropriation for the library, but allowing the library’s use of the city hall room for free if wanted by the Library Board.
