FVCC logger sports finish fourth in Missoula

MISSOULA — The Flathead Valley Community College logger sports team finished fourth at the 77th annual Association of Western Forestry Clubs conclave last weekend at Fort Missoula.

The four-day event, which is the team’s largest of the season, began on Wednesday and featured 131 competitors from 12 schools. FVCC scored 115 total points, behind the top three of Montana (223), Cal Poly (197) and Northern Arizona (129). FVCC has won the AWFC conclave 14 times in program history, more than any other school.

FVCC claimed four individual wins, including both pole climbs. Amber Larsen won the women’s race, ascending 30 feet in just 8.12 seconds. Luke Comstock took the men’s title, scaling 50 feet in 9.76 seconds. Brielle Birgensmith won the women’s axe throw and Seth Probert the men’s vertical speed chop.

The top six men’s and women’s finishers in each event earned points toward the team total and FVCC totaled 21 top-six individual finishes. Birgensmith was fifth in the choker race and obstacle pole in addition to her axe throw win. Comstock placed in the top six four times, including third in the obstacle pole and choker race, and a sixth place finish in birling (log rolling).

FVCC won the team championship the prior weekend at the University of Idaho Lumberjack Classic, outpointing second place Montana 179-143. Probert finished second in the Bull of the Woods (top male competitor) standings and Erin McGowan was second in the Belle of the Woods (top female competitor) race.

The AWFC conclave concludes FVCC’s competitive season, but the team will be part of the 27th annual Family Forestry Expo on Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Trumbull Creek Educational Forest in Columbia Falls, where student-athletes will be giving short demonstrations in select events.
