The Sergeant Greg Moore Memorial Scholarship has been established by friends of Moore through the North Idaho College Foundation to honor the Coeur d’Alene Police officer who was killed in the line of duty on May 5, 2015.

The Walla Walla Sunrise Rotary Club has already donated $4,000 toward the scholarship. Moore grew up in Walla Walla, Wash., and is the son of retired Walla Walla Police Capt. Fred Moore. Sgt. Greg Moore served with the Coeur d’Alene Police Department for 14 years. During his tenure in Coeur d’Alene, Moore was a patrol officer, field training officer, and school resource officer. He was well-known for his leadership skills and willingness to mentor other officers. He is survived by his wife, Lindy, and two children, Dylon and Gemma.

“The goal is to endow the scholarship so that the fund lives in perpetuity with scholarships awarded each year, year after year, forever, in Sgt. Moore’s memory,” said Carmel Abblitt, Kootenai County deputy prosecuting attorney. Abblitt helped establish the scholarship. “Sgt. Moore was a police officer, but more importantly he was a father, a son, a husband, a man who made the ultimate sacrifice serving the community and people that he loved.”

The endowment will provide scholarships for children of Kootenai County law enforcement and fire protection personnel who wish to follow in their parents’ footsteps. Awards will be made to students who are pursuing degrees in Law Enforcement, Fire Sciences, and Fire Fighter Training -- either credit or non-credit programs.

100 percent of donated funds will support the scholarship. To make a donation, contact the NIC Foundation at (208) 769-5978 or donate online at www.nic.edu/foundation.
