Rain, cooler temperatures dampen sports last week

It was a quiet week for sports, as rain and cooler temperatures followed our young athletes around the region. Here are a few tennis, baseball and track scores:
Tennis: April 26
St. Ignatius 3, Clark Fork 1, at Superior
Singles: Daisie VanderBos from St. Ignatius defeated Superior Mackenzie Spence, 7-5, 6-1.
St. Ignatius Brooklie Hunt, defeated Superior Haleigh Bantranger, 6-3, 6-4
St. Ignatius Alyssa Rith, defeated Superior Madison Courser, 8-1
Doubles: Superior Alise Ruthford and Sammi Francis, defeated St. Ignatius Alyssa Rith and Sierra Esslinger, 6-4, 6-1.
Whitefish ARM Invitational track tournament
Track and field students travelled to Whitefish for the ARM Invitational tournament on Saturday. Teams included Glacier, Whitefish, Plains, Polson, Columbia Falls, Bigfork, Havre, Missoula Loyola-Sacred Heart, Shelby, Eureka, Thompson Falls, Superior, Frenchtown, Cut Bank, St. Ignatius, and Troy.
Team scores: Glacier, first place with 127, Whitefish 54, Plains, 52. Out of the 16 teams, Superior placed 12th with a score of 10.
400 meter relay: Superior took sixth place with 56.12.
Javelin: Marissa Koke took sixth with 107-4.
Missoula Pioneers baseball:
April 28, Pioneers traveled to Hamilton and lost to the Broot Red Sox, 10-6.
April 30, doubleheader against Electric City Outlaws in Great Falls. Pioneers won the first game, 6-1 and lost the second game, 6-0. Next, was a doubleheader home game in Bonner on May 1, against the Helena Cyclones, Pioneers won both games 11-0 and 9-7.

Runners help cancer patients 'Fuel The Fight'
Colorful balloons representing different types of cancer adorned the finish line at Frenchtown Pond State Park on Sept. 30 at the second annual Fuel the Fight 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run. The event is a fundraiser to provide pre-paid fuel cards to help cancer patients in rural communities around Missoula off-set the costs of traveling to and from their treatments.
Students enjoy Talk (and Walk!) Like a Pirate Day
It was all hands on deck at the Mineral County Library’s first Talk Like a Pirate Day program held on Sept. 19 after school. Around 30 landlubber hearties gathered and played games, walked the plank, drew their own treasure maps and drank pirate punch.
Spring wolf sightings reported in area
Prior to 1990, there were very few people in Montana who may have heard the howl of a wolf. By 1925 the species was eradicated from the state and remained virtually extinct until recovery efforts began.
