A Kalispell family lost its garage, chicken coop and chickens in a fire early Tuesday morning.

According to Kalispell Fire Chief Dave Dedman, the fire was reported by a passer-by at 769 Seventh Ave. W.N. at 1:35 a.m.

Responding firefighters found a detached garage that had smoke billowing out of it and visible flames.

The fire was extinguished quickly from the exterior of the building, Dedman said, but the structure and belongings inside it were a total loss due to extensive fire and heat damage.

The fire was caused by a heat lamp.

“They had a chicken coop that was attached to the side of the garage and the heat lamp was there to provide heat for the chickens,” Dedman said. “They didn’t make it.”

Dedman did not know how many chickens died in the fire.

Family members sleeping in the nearby home were uninjured.

The Kalispell Fire Department was assisted by Evergreen Fire Rescue, Smith Valley Fire Department, Kalispell Police Department and Flathead Electric Cooperative.
