School and law authorities spent Tuesday morning trying to figure out who broke into Flathead High School and did significant damage during the night.

Superintendent Mark Flatau said the vandalism was discovered by school staffers around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. Damage included broken windows, drinking fountains that were ripped from the walls and sawdust and toilet paper that had been tossed in hallways and common areas.

Trash containers were destroyed. A large moose statue in the common area — loaned to the school as an art piece — was broken.

“It was tipped over and the horn broken off,” Flatau said.

The statue stands about seven feet tall.

Staffers and students who arrived at the school early for off-season conditioning helped clean up the mess.

“They were a big help, the football team in particular, and coaching staff,” Flatau said. “If it wasn’t for their help, the building wouldn’t have been as prepared for students at 8 a.m. The majority of it was just a mess.”

Classes at Flathead were able to start on time with little interruption in class schedules. The dollar value of the damage was not immediately known.

“There were drinking fountains torn off the wall,” Flatau said. “We’re not talking about petty amounts.”

Kalispell Police are investigating the crimes.

“We are fortunate that they are on board and I think they have some pretty good leads,” Flatau said.

Any helpful information in solving the case should be relayed to Flathead School Resource Officer Cory Clarke.

Flatau said that it appeared that whoever broke in might have cut his or her hand on a window. Beneath a broken window, there were a few drops of blood that were swabbed and logged by police to potentially be analyzed for DNA, Flatau said.

The blood was not widespread and was quickly cleaned up, according to Flatau.
