TENNIS: Glacier ahead of pack at Northern AA divisional
Andy Viano | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 9 years, 7 months AGO
Glacier’s boys and girls each hold one point leads after a rain-shortened first day of the Northern AA divisional at Flathead Valley Community College on Thursday.
The Wolfpack boys sent three of four singles players through to the semifinals and have 23 points thus far, one ahead of Great Falls High. Glacier’s boys have won five consecutive divisional titles.
The girls have 17 points and are at the top of a very tight race. Great Falls is next with 16 points, followed by Great Falls C.M. Russell (14) and Flathead (11).
Spencer Johnson, Holland Blalack and Graham Friedman all went 2-0 to lead the Glacier boys in singles. Blalack and Johnson won both matches comfortably, in straight sets, while Friedman needed to fight off Flathead’s Ridge Lembke, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 to reach the semis.
Flathead put two girls through to the semifinals, with Ellie Berreth and Rayna Darrow both cruising to a pair of wins. Berreth dropped only two games in four sets, while Darrow was nearly as good, losing only three games in two straight set wins.
Glacier also has both a boys and girls team in the doubles semifinals. Tyler Keller and Logan Hill earned two straight set wins for the boys, with the duo cruising into the semis with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kyle Korb and Tyler Patrick of CMR.
Maya Buckingham and Anna Cecil also posted a pair of wins, and had an even easier time in the quarterfinals, blanking Maddie Good and Delaney Leo of Great Falls, 6-0, 6-0.
The top four finishers in each of the four brackets — boys and girls, singles and doubles — will advance to the state tournament, May 19-20 in Great Falls. The double-elimination divisional format means any player or team that did not lose twice on Thursday is still alive for a state tournament berth.
Play was interrupted for more than an hour on Thursday, during second round matches, and play was halted early when a second rain shower began. Despite the weather, all 80 scheduled matches were still started.
The final day of play gets underway this morning at 9 a.m. Matches that were interrupted by rain on Thursday will begin the day, followed by semifinal and championship round action and the completion of the consolation bracket.
