WASHINGTON D.C. — A Wahluke High School student recently won the 2016 Congressional Art Competition for high schoolers in the Fourth Congressional District, which covers Douglas, Okanogan, Grant, Yakima, Franklin, Benton and Adams counties.

Rep. Dan Newhouse, R-Sunnyside, was assisted by an advisory committee comprised of Fourth District residents to help select finalists for the annual competition. The winning entry, dubbed “Soul Sisters,” was submitted by Wahluke High School student Audra Coulson. Coulson’s entry will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol alongside other winning entries from congressional districts from around the U.S. for one year. Coulson will travel to Washington, D.C. to attend a reception sponsored by the Congressional Institute.

“This competition gives high school students in Central Washington the opportunity to showcase their artwork in the United States Capitol for thousands of visitors to see,” Newhouse said. “I congratulate Audra Coulson from Wahluke High School in Mattawa for submitting the winning entry, ‘Soul Sisters.’ I also congratulate everyone who participated and those whose work will be displayed proudly in Fourth District congressional offices in Yakima and the Tri-Cities.”

The second place winner, “Remember,” submitted by Toppenish High School student Yliana Adame, will be offered the opportunity to have her artwork hung in the Fourth District office in Yakima. The third place winner, “Madre de la Naturaleza,” submitted by Toppenish High School Student Selina Villafan, will be offered the chance to have her artwork displayed in the Fourth District in the Tri-Cities.
