1: I spent 35 years in the College of Veterinary Medicine doing biomedical research to make the lives of animals and people better and in educating veterinary students. I am running because our state legislators are choosing not to address issues that will significantly improve the lives of most Idahoans.
2: My whole professional life was spent solving complex problems like those facing Idaho. My problem solving approach is to learn as much about an issue as possible, develop a team with different skill sets or points of view, and together we work to solve the problem
3. The most important issues are: Idaho has not adequately recovered economically from the great recession; Idaho is not providing sufficient funds to properly educate its children; and here is a need to protect our natural resources while acquiring economic benefit. Why — the Legislature is not serious about ad- dressing these issues.
4. Ida-ho’s big complex issues can be solved by developing an issue team that first de- fines the goal, then develops a series of steps that solve the issue. Each step is evaluated before proceeding to the next step. It is best to start with the easiest issue and move to the more difficult.
5. I hope to establish a culture based where all appropriate levels of government, irrespective of party affiliation, work together with the concerned citizens and businesses to address issues that are important to the wellbeing of all Idahoans.
6. A. Expand Medicaid so that the working poor become eligible for Medicaid. Why - there is a significant economic benefit to each District 7 County since closing the gap will significantly reduce indigent medical costs. Closing the gap also has humanitarian basis.
B. Gradually increasing the minimum wage. Why- money earned by low-income workers benefits the worker but also the entire community, as the money does not leave but stays within the community.
C. Funding education so that four-day school weeks are no longer occurring. Currently over 20,000 Idaho children go to school four days a week. These are mostly children in rural communities. Why — Idaho students need to be prepared to compete in a global economy.
7. Closing the Medicaid gap, raising the minimum wage, and adequately supporting education requires developing a plan with the citizens of District 7. The first item to be addressed would be closing the gap. The plan can then be expanded to other Districts in the area and then outside the area.
8. During the legislative session I would be in Boise. When out of session I estimate that it would take about 15 hours per week with legislative issues.
9. Working with the elected officials and interested people in each of the 4 counties who are interested in making District 7 better regardless of party affiliation. There are citizens in District 7 who are working very hard to help their county recover from the great recession. What an honor it will be to part of that effort.
10. The main challenge is economic. District 7 is Idaho’s poorest District. Historically, it has relied on extraction of natural resources, lumber and minerals. Efforts are being made to bring in new industries and to promote tourism. I can be a voice that champions these efforts in the legislature while working with all constituents to improve the economic well being of District 7.
11. The economy, education and natural resources
12. That all Democrats believe in tax and spend. I believe in an effective, transparent, and efficient government that works for all the people to make their life better. I believe in responsive, effective, and efficient government. I believe in a government that is not ideologically motivated but one that works to help improve the lives of all Idahoans.
13. That my role in the Legislature would be to help make Idaho better.
I would do this by listen to what you have to say, working together we would develop the issues that improves the lives of all Idahoans and then together we would strive to make our dream a reality.
14. Question: Why are you running and why should we vote for you?
Answer: See answers to the questions above.
