SANDPOINT -— Local and regional merchants partnered with the Bonner Community Food Center Wednesday to provide fresh fruit to those in need.

Sandpoint's Super 1 Foods, 624 Larch Street, Charlie's Produce Spokane and First Fruits Marketing of Washington teamed up to donate 1,800 pounds of fresh apples to the food bank in the latest leg of the Take a Bite out of Hunger campaign.

"Last year alone, over 250,000 pounds of fresh apples were donated in participating retailers' names to local food banks in their communities," according to a press release from First Fruits.

An apple marketing cooperative owned by growers, First Fruits is committed to distributing high quality fruit while pledging a portion of its proceeds to support nonprofit organizations like Bonner Community Food Center.

"Hunger isn't just about being hungry. It's about food insecurity, or not having regular access to safe, affordable and nutritious foods. As of of 2014, 14 percent of all U.S. households were food-insecure, according to USDA," according to the press release.

"We're proud to give back to our community and participating in Take a Bite Out of Hunger is a great way to make a difference," said Steve Furin, Sandpoint's Super 1 Foods store director. "This donation of more than 1,800 pounds of apples ensures that the shelves at our local food bank are stocked with fresh produce."

Since its inception in 2010, Take a Bite Out of Hunger has donated more than a million pounds of apples in cooperation with retailers throughout the region.
