Glacier sweeps AA divisionals

The Glacier boys eked out a sixth straight championship and the Wolfpack girls followed with a title of their own on Friday afternoon at the Northern AA divisional tournament at Flathead Valley Community College.
Glacier’s boys earned 45 total points, one more than Great Falls High, to claim the team title at the two-day event. The final result was still in doubt when the Wolfpack’s doubles team of Ben Wright and Hunter Danz beat Seth Dabler and Chase Perry of Great Falls, 6-3, 6-4 in the third-place match.
“We squeaked it out,” Glacier coach Josh Munro said. “A couple of the boys came through big today, recovered after a little bit of disappointment yesterday.
“Ben and Hunter really closed well, made sure that they helped solidify the win and got us three critical points there at the end to put us over the top.”
Danz and Wright lost in the first round to the same Great Falls duo — Dabler and Perry — they beat to finish in third place.
The top four singles and doubles finishers at the divisional all advance to the state tournament, which is set for Thursday and Friday in Great Falls. Eight total Glacier athletes qualified for state, including the divisional champion doubles team of Maya Buckingham and Anna Cecil.
“The girls, man, they stepped up,” Munro said. “Maya and Anna put together a heck of a run … their focus is better, their shot placement is better and they’re going to be a team that can make some noise come state.”
Glacier’s girls finished with 34 total points, seven clear of second place Great Falls High. Flathead was next with 26 points, followed by CMR (25).
Glacier’s Spencer Johnson won the boys singles title, completing a dominating tourney with back-to-back 6-0, 6-0 wins in the semifinal and championship rounds. Johnson beat his teammate, Holland Blalalck, in the final. Johnson lost only one game in his four matches at the divisional tournament.
“It’s pretty cool,” Johnson said of winning the divisional title. “It’s not awesome beating my teammate, but first and second, you can’t complain about that.
“I actually played really well this weekend. I’m just really geared up for state and I’m pretty excited. I’ve got a lot of confidence now for next weekend.”
“You look at his scores, he played clean all the way around, didn’t really lose games,” Munro said of Johnson. “He made sure his focus this weekend was hit big, don’t take it easy and don’t get loopy which he had done a little during the season when he wasn’t pushed as hard.
“He’s knows he’s got to come out and he’s got to swing. I think that’s going to be a big change that you see out of him (at the state tournament). He’s going to come in with a purpose and a lot of focus.”
Glacier’s Cayli Mower and McKenna Johnson also qualified for the state tournament, finishing third by winning four straight matches after a second round loss on Thursday. They beat Flathead’s Bailey Bladholm and Noel Senner in the consolation final, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.
Bladholm and Senner had a remarkable comeback run of their own, winning four straight times after a first-round loss to finish fourth, qualifying for state.
The pair will be joined in Great Falls by Flathead singles standouts Ellie Berreth and Rayna Darrow, who finished second and third, respectively. Berreth and Darrow both lost to eventual champion Mackenzie George of CMR, who beat Darrow in the semifinals, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, and Berreth, just a sophomore, in the final, 6-4, 6-0.
“The girls were pretty gritty,” Flathead coach Rick Berreth said. “They fought hard and got three placements, so a good step for them.”
Darrow bounced back from her semifinal loss to beat Anna Johnson of Great Falls, 6-1, 6-2 in the third-place match. That win gave Flathead the points it needed to leapfrog into third place in the team standings.
“Last year, Rayna was a number four doubles player,” Rick Berreth said. “To progress as she has as a senior at the AA level is mind-boggling. For her to place at divisionals after being a doubles player last year is just remarkable.”
Great Falls dominated the boys doubles tournament en route to its second place team finish. In an all-Bison final, Tom Johnson and Taylor Lunn defeated Eric Abarr and Miggy San Pedro, 7-5, 7-6 (5).
