Student leaders tell tales out of school

SANDPOINT — Six young women in red and white baseball sleeves and jeans stood in turn before the podium in the Ponderay Events Center meeting room to explain their experiences as student council representatives.
The Sandpoint High School students spoke before an appreciative group of LPOSD trustees and audience members Tuesday evening. Each student, from freshman class representative to student body president, had a different tale to tell. Some favorite activities they mentioned included Moose Madness, a friendly inter-school spirit competition that awards the winning school possession of a moose antler trophy for a year. As a part of the contest, students raised funds that go to Toys for Tots, instilling the fun event with a measure of social responsibility.
Another student spoke about the school assemblies council members are involved in, including Veterans' Day, Homecoming, Moose Madness, finals week and student council election assemblies. Another event the students help organize is Mock DUI, an annual program for seniors designed to dissuade them from drinking and driving, or driving while distracted.
Senior Carolyn Suppiger told the LPOSD board about her experiences with statewide student council gatherings. Not only has she attended, but she was elected president of the Idaho Association of Student Councils in 2015.
"What are you most proud of as student council members?" asked Superintendent Shawn Woodward when the presentation was over.
Suppiger said it was probably the fundraising component of Moose Madness week.
"I hope they keep doing it next year," she said.
