BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Glacier Twins win opener; Kalispell Lakers AA wins two

FLORENCE — The Glacier Twins settled down after a rocky start to beat the Bitterroot Bucs 9-3 in the Class A American Legion baseball conference opener for both teams on Saturday.
Glacier scored twice in the top half of the first inning, but allowed the Bucs to go on top 3-2 in the bottom half of the inning by committing two errors.
Glacier shut down the Bucs after that.
“We hit the ball well, put the ball in play, bunted well,” Glacier Twins coach Bob Rupp said. “Hit the ball when we needed to.”
The Twins (3-3 overall, 1-0 league) scored runs in six innings.
Vincent Smith, 2 for 5, tripled for the Twins in the fifth inning.
AJ Wetsch, the winning pitcher, doubled.
“The pitching was really good,” Rupp said.
“The last few games we have struggled with middle relief, but that changed today with Ryan Veneman.”
The two teams play again today at 11 a.m. Tyler Murphy will start on the mound for the Twins.

MISSOULA — Kalispell and Missoula split a wild back-and-forth Class A nonconference doubleheader.
Randy Stultz, 2 for 4, belted two triples and Jaycob Serrano, 3 for 5, had a double and drove in four runs for the Lakers in the victory.
Clayton Jaques, 3 for 5, doubled twice.
Ryan Symmes and Jaryon Venturini both had two hits in the loss. Venturini and Sam Elliott both drove in two runs.
The Lakers host Helena for a doubleheader today starting at 1 p.m.

BUTTE — Leif Ericksen tossed a one-hitter in the second game as the Kalispell Lakers swept the Butte Miners in Class AA doubleheader play.
Ericksen had three strikeouts and walked two batters in his five innings on the mound.
He singled in two runs to help his cause.
Jonas Nyman went 3 for 3 and drove in two runs for the Lakers. He doubled along with Joe Broughton.
In the first game, Haydn Schlepp, 4 for 4, had the hot bat for Kalispell.
He doubled, along with Broughton.
Dawson Smith was the winning pitcher in that contest. He went six innings, fanning five and allowing five hits.
Kalispell never trailed in either outing.
“Both guys on the mound threw well for us,” Lakers coach Ryan Malmin said.
“We were pretty aggressive on the bases, had six stolen bases in each game.
“Overall, we were a little sloppy in the first game, but did a better job in the second.”
Kalispell plays a doubleheader today in Helena.
