COEUR d'ALENE — PFLAG-Coeur d'Alene will be taking guests "Over the Rainbow" Friday evening during the inaugural Q-Prom at Lake City Center.

A new spin on an old tradition, Q-Prom is an all-ages dance party for people who might never have gone to prom because of their gender or sexuality.

"We had been hearing from various students that they didn't feel welcome at their high school dances, that they were gay or transgender," PFLAG member and event chair Juli Stratton said Tuesday. "We just decided we needed to create a safe space for anyone who wants to go."

The drug-free, alcohol-free, weapon-free and bullying-free environment is open to anyone who wants to attend Q-Prom. The only requirement is that people have respect and are non-judgmental of others.

"There is absolutely nothing wrong with gender and sexually diverse people," Stratton said, adding that more and more young people are coming to PFLAG as they seek safe and positive environments.

Stratton, who did not attend her own proms, said it's important for young people to have this experience and not miss out just because they don't feel like they belong.

"We need to show our youth that they can be who they are and be respected and have a really good time," she said. "When they feel empowered, they can live their lives in the best way possible."

Q-Prom will include a photo booth with professional photographers, food and refreshments, a DJ and plenty of fun decorations to go along with the "Over the Rainbow" theme.

"We have lots of rainbows and there is a slant toward the Emerald City," Stratton said. "A lot of people have come together to pitch in on the decorations."

Tickets for Q-Prom are $10 for students, $20 for non-students and will be available at the event.

PFLAG is a nonprofit dedicated to providing support, education and advocacy for LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender) people, their family and friends.

"Some people who are LGBT never went to their prom or currently don’t go because they do not feel welcome or are otherwise excluded because of their gender and sexuality," Stratton said. "We are so excited to bring an alternative prom to Coeur d’Alene and create a welcoming space for all genders and sexual orientations. This is just one way to celebrate all of those people."
