Lake Pend Oreille School District’s Safe Routes to School Bike to School Day was a great success districtwide, with nearly 300 students participating.

From parents and community volunteers to local police and fire departments, the day featured students riding to school and an emphasis on safety and health, according to coordinator Christa Finney.

Northside Elementary greeted 55 riders Wednesday morning, while Washington School celebrated a family of three generations among their 120 total riders. Kootenai Elementary will continue to see an average of 50 students who will ride to school the entire month of May. Hope School welcomed six riders Wednesday morning, and Farmin Stidwell racks were overflowing with over 100 bikes again this year. Sagle and Southside Schools did not participate this year.

Finney said Sandpoint Middle School continues to celebrate bike health and travel convenience with 30-50 riders a day, and Clark Fork Jr./Sr. High’s riders mainly consist of the Hope Elementary students who ride in to board their bus each weekday morning.

A special thanks goes out to all who volunteered to help our students bike to school safely.
