SANDPOINT — Students and parents, dressed in their casual best, filled rows of chairs in the Sandpoint High School commons at last Monday's Academic Achievement Night. It was an evening for the National Honor Society inductees and outgoing senior members to shine as the community gathered to laud their scholarly achievements.
Keynote speaker Eric Mann prefaced the student awards. Mann graduated from SHS in 2008 and came back after college for a teaching stint at the school. He now works as director of project engineering at Kochava building tools for app developers.
"I've never worked harder in my entire life, but it's never felt so good," Mann said of his job. "You can start building your dream tomorrow," he advised the honorees in the audience.
Caroline Suppiger, SHS and Honor Society president, then introduced a number of new inductees, including several freshmen, sophomores and one junior. She also named the new officers for the upcoming school year, which included Cienna Roget, president, Lanie Search, vice president, Charlie Crane and Jenny Maddox.
Next up were the National Honor Society senior pin recipients, announced by Roget. Those earning their pins included Cody Baldree, Katelyn Bruhjell, Paige Crane, Joey Crosby, Jackson Diercks, Logan Finney, Logan Hastings, Nan Kiebert, Corinne McClelland, Violet Plummer, Makenna Presnell, Benjamin Reich, Caroline Suppiger, and Baylee Webster.
Counselors Jeralyn Mire and Debb Nusbaum then conferred honor cords to 34 students in the Class of 2016 who had earned weighted GPAs of 4.0 or higher. While the majority of the cords were white, Caroline Suppiger, class valedictorian, received a gold honor cord, and Corinne McClelland, class salutatorian, received a red cord. All honorees present brought one or both parents to the front of the room where Mire placed the cords around the students' necks.
Before dispersing the students and their parents for group photos and refreshments, principal Tom Albertson made some brief closing remarks.
"What a powerful group of students," he said.
