LOCAL ROUNDUP: Hungry Horse Dam Visitor Center opens Friday

The Bureau of Reclamation will open the Hungry Horse Dam Visitor Center for the 2016 summer season on May 27.

The visitor center will be open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Sept. 10. Exhibits about the history of Hungry Horse Dam and its importance to the federal Columbia River Power System are featured.

Due to construction during the 2016 summer season, there may be unscheduled closures of the Hungry Horse Visitor Center. For updated information call 406-378-5241, extension 347.

Hungry Horse Dam stands 564 feet tall and was completed in 1953. It is located on the South Fork of the Flathead River, 15 miles south of the west entrance to Glacier National Park and 20 miles northeast of Kalispell. The dam is located off U.S. 2 in Hungry Horse.

Follow the signs just past the Hungry Horse/Glacier View Forest Service building to the visitor center.

From U.S. 2, travel approximately 4.5 miles to the visitor center located at the north end of the dam.

Bartending event will benefit Humane Society

A celebrity bartending fundraiser for the Humane Society of Northwest Montana will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, May 27, in the Boat Club Lounge and Restaurant at the Lodge at Whitefish Lake. The public is invited.

 Enjoy musical entertainment by singer/songwriter John Dunnigan.

 Admission is free and proceeds from silent auction items will be donated to help homeless cats and dogs at the Humane Society of Northwest Montana, home of the Charlotte Edkins Animal Adoption Center.

 The Lodge at Whitefish Lake is located at 1380 Wisconsin Ave. in Whitefish.


Community Action sponsors contest for new logo

The Community Action Partnership of Northwest Montana is marking its 40th anniversary by sponsoring a contest to change its logo.

Artists can showcase their creative graphic design abilities by entering. Competition is underway and will run through July 1.

The logo winner will receive $250 and have the design displayed on everything that incorporates the logo.

Other applicants’ designs still will be eligible for display in the lobby. All submissions will remain property of Community Action Partnership.

The criteria for the logo includes:

• Incorporating the “huggy hands” from the current logo.

• Incorporating both the organization’s name and acronym CAPNM.

• Submitting two versions of the logo (one in color and one in black and white).

• Must be a resident of the four-county area of Lincoln, Sanders, Lake and Flathead counties.
