Last week Superior postal carriers did more than deliver mail, they also picked up food. It was the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

“We picked up about 200 pounds of food,” said Frances Higgs, a contractor with the U.S. Postal Service.

There was a bin full of canned goods, macaroni and cheese, chili, Ramon noodles, salsa, and much more. Postcards announcing the drive went out on Wednesday, and they collected all the food within a day.

“People just leave a bag of food out by their mailbox, and we pick it up when we deliver the mail,” said Higgs, who’s been working at the post office for 38 years.

She said the Superior Post Office has been participating in the drive for at least ten years. The food is only collected on the rural routes. They used to have a drop off bin in the lobby of the building, but people kept stealing the food, she said.

After the drive, they drop it off at the Superior Food Bank. All of the food stays within the community.

“This is a good thing to do,” she said as she pulled bags of food from her mail car and put them into the bin. “I want to thank all of our customers who gave food this year. My drivers, Jacque Becker, Julie Brevig, and myself, feel that it’s a privilege to do this for the people in Superior.”
