TENNIS: Whitefish, Polson well represented at state

BOZEMAN — Deep squads in Polson and Whitefish have both schools setting their sights on a Class A state championship as play in the two-day state tournament begins Thursday.
The Pirates girls are coming off a 10th straight Northwestern A divisional title last week in Kalispell and are vying to bring home a state crown for the first time since 2012. The Bulldogs boys, meanwhile, won the divisional last week for the first time since 2008, the same year they last won the state title.
Marlee Congdon and Mollie Lemm met in the divisional championship match, which Congdon won, and the two are on opposite sides of the bracket at the state tournament. Congdon begins the tourney matched up with Corvallis’ Olivia Fehr while Lemm is opposite Fehr’s teammate Emma Pickett.
The Pirates also have two doubles teams in the draw. Olivia Hewston and Kyler Lundeen face Marenah Crockett and Ceeara Staiger of Hardin in round one, while Cassie Carlyle and Shawna Lenz get Billings Central’s Blayne Mayer and Molly Putnam.
Columbia Falls star senior Emily Getts was upset by Lemm in the semifinals of the divisional tournament, denying Getts a shot at a third straight divisional title, but Getts, who finished fourth at the state tournament each of the last two seasons, did qualify for state and begins this year’s event against Dillon’s Maggie Magee. If she wins, Getts would likely face defending state champion Barclay Fagg of Billings Central in second round play later Thursday.
Katie Fyall and Anna Peterson won the divisional doubles championship for Whitefish and begin with Hardin’s Imani Kindness and Naumie Dushane. Their teammates, Hannah Madsen and Heather Luedke, will tangle with Billings Central’s Kenna Adolph and Hailey Keller. Lili Szundy is representing the Bulldogs in the singles draw and faces Dillon’s Mariah McClure in round one.
The Whitefish boys team is led by singles standouts Max Smyley, Eric Holdhusen and Nathan Fauth. Smyley won the divisional and meets Havre’s Dustin Haas in round one, Holdhusen gets Jan Mann of Belgrade and Fauth faces Havre’s Jeff Miller, the defending state runner-up.
Two doubles teams will also be counted on to contribute to the Bulldogs’ point total in Bozeman. Ryan Brown and Cole Turgeon are paired up against Simon Marshall and Joey Nichols of Billings Central in the first round. Brenden Bulls and Austin Reese will meet Glendive’s Jarod Asche and Bret Vester in their opening match.
The region’s only other two representatives in the state tournament are a pair of doubles teams from Polson, but they are the first and second place finishers from the divisional. Champions Cadis Chowning and Matt Sitter will get Hardin’s Darnell Left Hand and Michael Neeser in the first round.
The second place team of Quaid Harlan and Jaron Morgan starts its tournament with Glendive’s Josh Hoffer and Jory Opp. Morgan, Polson's top singles player, is replacing Colin Kenney as Harlan's doubles partner after Kenney was injured in last week's divisional final.
Tournament play Thursday will be held at Montana State University and includes first round, second round and consolation matches. The remaining contests, including championship matches, will be held Friday in Livingston.
