In a galaxy far, far, away a school held a family STEAM night.

Well, maybe not that far, it was St. Regis and the evening was sponsored by the St. Regis 21st Century program. It was held on May 4, in the school cafeteria, and it was a Star Wars themed event. STEAM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics, was held to “encourage positive interactions between parents, students, and staff in an engaging environment,” according to one of the program coordinators, Laura Jarvis.

What that translated into was an evening of fun, where approximately 50 participants shot Marshmallow Blasters, played Star Wars Trivia, and drove Sphero robots around the room. The families were assigned to different groups, like “Darth Vaders”, and “BB-8’s”, and then rotated through different activities.

The 21st Century program, which is directed by Julie Burklund, hold family nights throughout the year, and this was the first “Star Wars” themed event. The program is a federal after school initiative, which provides funding for after school and summer programs.
