Events across valley mark Memorial Day

United Veterans of the Flathead Valley will present military honors at various locations and cemeteries around the valley Monday on Memorial Day.

The public is invited to attend these ceremonies.

Schedule of events:

9:30 a.m. — Bigfork Community Cemetery.

10 a.m. — Lone Pine Cemetery (Little Brown Church), Bigfork.

10:30 a.m. — Glacier Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Kalispell.

11 a.m. — Veterans Memorial, Depot Park, Kalispell.

11:45 a.m. — VFW Luncheon, Post 2252, Kalispell.

12:45 p.m. — C.E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery, retire and raise flag.

1:45 p.m. — Fairview Cemetery.

2:30 p.m. — Veterans Memorial, Marantette Park, Columbia Falls.

3 p.m. — Woodlawn Cemetery, Columbia Falls.

3:30 p.m. — Montana Veterans Home Cemetery, Columbia Falls.

• Memorial Day ceremonies in Polson begin with a parade starting at 10 a.m. The parade route begins at the Elks parking lot at Sixth and Main Streets and continues north on Main to Third Avenue, and left into the bank parking lot, across from the Cove. The parade is open to all veterans; however, other groups including political parties, civic clubs, etc., are not allowed to participate.

There will be a short ceremony in the bank parking lot with the Veterans Honor Guard and a local speaker. Following the parade, there will be a brief ceremony at the Polson Cemetery, Veterans Section, where a wreath will be placed to commemorate fallen veterans and a bell will be rung to mark each armed conflict since 1776.

• Columbia Falls American Legion Freedom Post 72 will conduct its Remembrance and Honor Walk for its Vietnam veterans at 10:45 a.m. Memorial Day.

Post members will meet at the Super 1 Foods parking lot, assemble at the City Welcome Park, and then walk to the bridge for the third annual Missing at Sea Ceremony, finishing the day at the Marantette Park Memorial Wall at 1 p.m. sharp when the third plaque on the Memorial Wall will be unveiled. The United Veterans will do their service at the Memorial Wall at 2:30 p.m.

• Fairview Cemetery’s annual Memorial Day service will begin with an honor guard presentation at 1:45 p.m. at the cemetery at 1225 Fairview Cemetery Road in Columbia Falls. Joel Heckmann will officiate the ceremony that begins at 2 p.m.
