Legion baseball: Lakers seek sweep in Memorial Day series with Twins

WHITEFISH — Kalispell Lakers AA (18-4 overall) never trailed in downing the Glacier Twins A 9-6 on Sunday evening at Memorial Field in the second of the three-game Memorial Day series between the Valley rivals.

The Lakers will go for the sweep tonight at 7 at Griffin Field.

Kalispell won Saturday’s matchup 9-7.

The Lakers seemed to have this game under control after scoring five runs in the seventh for a 9-1 lead.

The Twins, however, answered with five runs in the bottom half of the inning to make it close.

“We did a good job of sticking with the process,” Lakers coach Ryan Malmin said.

“They would score and we were able to answer back and extend the lead.We got a little sloppy in the seventh inning and those guys put some hits together and made it closer.”

Glacier outhit Kalispell 10-7, led by Vinny Smith, 3 for 5, James Sampson-Keck, 2 for 5, and Greyson Bistodeau, 2 for 4.

Colten Parker doubled for Glacier and Andrew Schleusner doubled for Kalispell.

WHITEFISH — Brady Peiffer and Kaeden Morisaki combined on a 3-hitter as Kalispell won the second of the three-game Memorial Day series between the Valley rivals at Memorial Field.

Peiffer went seven innings, allowing two hits, striking out seven and walking two batters.

Morisaki pitched the final two innings. He allowed a hit and struck out one batter.

Ryan Symmes, 4 for 6, had a big day at the plate for the Lakers (12-5 overall).

Jaryon Venturini, Randy Stultz, and Nathan Vanderbeek all doubled once.

Stultz went 3 for 5 and drove in two runs. Jaycob Serrano, 2 for 2, doubled twice.

The final game of the series is today at 4 p.m. at Griffin Field.

Kalispell won Saturday’s opener 10-4.

EUREKA — Mo Henderson tossed a 3-hitter in the second game of a doubleheader as the Kootenai Valley Rangers managed to gain a nonconference split with the Cranbrook Bandits.

Henderson gave up three singles, walked two batters and fanned four.

Dawson Henrie led the offense, going 4 for 4, which included a double and a triple.

Sam Hannay, 2 for 4, also doubled.

Hank Dunn, 2 for 4, drove in three runs for the Rangers.

In the opener, Cranbrook jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead and put the game out of reach with a five run fifth inning.

Henrie doubled in that outing while James Dunn and Mo Henderson had two RBIs each.

Leif Ericksen, 2 for 4, tripled and drove in three runs to help spark the Lakers to a victory over the visiting Twins in the first game of the Memorial Day series between the two Valley rivals.

Dawson Smith went eight innings on the mound for the Lakers to pick up the victory.

Micah Benson, 2 for 5, had two RBIs along with Haydn Schlepp for Kalispell.

Tiler Whiteker, 2 for 4, doubled for Kalispell’s other extra base hit.

Colten Parker, 3 for 5, led Glacier’s offense. Tyler Murphy doubled for the team’s only extra base hit.

Kalispell outhit Glacier 16-9.

Clayton Jaques had a perfect game at the plate while Drew Scherrer went the distance on the mound as the Lakers spilled the Twins in the first game of the Memorial Day series between the two Valley rivals.

Jaques, 4 for 4, doubled, tripled and drove in four runs. He scored twice.

Ryan Symmes, 2 for 4, also doubled for the victors.

Scherrer allowed seven hits, struck out seven and walked four batters.

Terek Bistodeau, 2 for 4, and Tom Hellwig, 2 for 3, were the leading hitters for the Twins.

Matt Morrison, 1 for 4, doubled and drove in two runs for Glacier.

CRANBROOK, British Columbia — A big nine-run sixth inning nearly saved the day for Libby in the second game of a nonconference doubleheader with Cranbrook, but the hosts tied the game at 10-all with a run in the bottom of the seventh and added another run in the eighth to pull out the extra-inning victory for the sweep.

Libby stranded 10 runners in that outing and committed eight errors.

In the opener, Cranbrook jumped out to a 5-1 lead after three innings and rolled from there. Libby also left 10 runners on base in that one.

Libby outhit Cranbrook on the day, 18-13.

Libby is back in action Wednesday at Kalispell Lakers AA for a single nine-inning game starting at 6 p.m.
