Honors and awards celebrated at annual banquet

St. Regis Business Professional of America (BPA) and Future Farmers of America (FFA) held their annual member, parent and community banquet on May 20 in the St. Regis gym. There were 16 BPA members this year, and 42 FFA members.

The BPA team officers included Connor Dunlap, President; Madison Hill, Vice-President; Anna Sanford, Secretary; Madison Kelly, Historian; Emma Hill, Treasurer; and Nicole Orrison, Past Historian.

FFA team officers were Madison Hill, President; Anna Sanford, Vice-President; Emma Hill, Treasurer and Secretary; Travis Jaquez, Reporter; Jacob Jasper, Sentinel; and Nicole Orrison, Past Secretary.

The banquet included opening ceremonies, a video, a key note address by Brandon Braaten, as well as administrative addresses by Principal Joe Steele and Superintendent, Judy McKay. Followed by the awards ceremony.

The CTE Community Volunteer award was given to Jackie Sanford. This award represents outstanding support to the Career and Technical Education Programs at the school. The CTE Business Partnership award was presented to the St. Regis Travel Center, for all of their support.The BPA Appreciation award went to Tina Hill and the FFA Appreciation award went to Brandon Braaten. The FFA Member of the Year was Kaitlin Jackson and the FFA Leadership award went to Emma Hill. The Member of the Year Award is presented to a student who shows superior commitment and dedication to the Chapter and community. The FFA Leadership Award is similar and is presented to a student who shows true leadership in all areas of school, community, and family.

The banquet also highlighted member’s accomplishments and participation during the year with Madison Hill receiving the prestigious Montana State FFA Degree. She is the first student at St. Regis to receive this degree. It was the result of hours of community service projects, her participation in the Mineral County Fair where she raised steers as part of her Supervised Agriculture Experience Project, and the elected offices she’s held over her years in FFA.

Runners help cancer patients 'Fuel The Fight'

Colorful balloons representing different types of cancer adorned the finish line at Frenchtown Pond State Park on Sept. 30 at the second annual Fuel the Fight 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run. The event is a fundraiser to provide pre-paid fuel cards to help cancer patients in rural communities around Missoula off-set the costs of traveling to and from their treatments.

It was all hands on deck at the Mineral County Library’s first Talk Like a Pirate Day program held on Sept. 19 after school. Around 30 landlubber hearties gathered and played games, walked the plank, drew their own treasure maps and drank pirate punch.

Prior to 1990, there were very few people in Montana who may have heard the howl of a wolf. By 1925 the species was eradicated from the state and remained virtually extinct until recovery efforts began.
