Facts from the past gleaned from the Moses Lake Herald, Columbia Basin Herald and The Neppel Record by Cheryl (Driggs) Elkins:

From Oct. 4, 1973:

City appoints park director

Cecil D. Lee, 36, has been appointed Moses Lake’s new Parks and Recreation Director, City Manager Chester Waggener announced today.

Lee will assume his duties here Nov. 1. He is presently Assistant Parks and Recreation Director in Corvallis, Ore.

“Lee handled most of the day-to-day administrative duties in the Corvallis department,” Waggener said. He was one of the 37 applicants for the Moses Lake position.

Lee is married and has three children.

Holiday for license staff

George Sangster of the Washington State Department of Motor Vehicles, Driver’s License Division, has announced that the local office will be closed Saturday in observance of the Columbus Day holiday. Most office will close Monday, but Monday is the normal closure day for the local facility, so it will take the holiday Saturday.

Concert slated for Ephratans

The Bershire Chamber Players will appear in concert Jan. 30 at the Lee Theater as the third event in the Basin Community Concert Association’s 1973-74 season. The group performs on flute, clarinet, violin, cello and piano.

Other concerts on the Ephrata schedule include The Cosmopolitans Nov. 13 and Whittemore and Lowe March 28. In Moses Lake, Thomas Schumacher will appear Oct. 25; Western Savoyards Jan. 12; Eglevsky Ballet Feb. 22; and Angus Godwin April 20.

Members in the Basin Community Concert Association are open until Oct. 15.

From the Columbia Basin Herald on July 10, 1952:

Lunsford wins A-Main event in stock races

Les Lunsford (98) of Ephrata took the A-main event in Sunday’s stock car races on the Legion Speedway, before a fair sized crowd that stayed in their own cars to get out of the dust.

Digger O’Dell (88) came in second followed by Histon Robinson (19) of Quincy, Roy Fuller (8) of Moses Lake and Louie Vitolo (77) of Soap Lake.

A Soap Lake man, Chuck Frazer, took the B-main, with only four cars running, following by Jack Sitton of Wilbur.

Best time was Curt Elshire’s, followed by Buzz Reed and Wayne Gardner. Eishire took the trophy dash to add to his points. Heat winners were Harold Chapman, Vitolo and O’Dell. The track was fast, smoother than before, with more work promised before the July 20 race. The Columbia Basin Stock Car Racing Association plans races here every other Sunday for the rest of the summer.
