QUINCY — Kaeden Murphy couldn’t buy a break, not even on Senior Night.

The 5-foot-11 Quincy wide receiver had a 70-yard touchdown pass off a wide receiver option negated. On that same drive, he was on the receiving end of a 22-yard scoring strike, which was also called back. If that don’t beat all, he had a step on the Grandview defender, but dropped the ball on the goal line, all on the same drive.

But the Jacks (4-6) played their most complete game of the season. The defense pitched its second consecutive shutout and the offense scored in all four quarters and Quincy sent 14 seniors off with a 33-0 victory over Grandview at Jaycee Stadium on Thursday.

Senior Travis Harris ended his career with touchdown runs of 2 and 11 yards. Sophomore Pablo Mariscal rushed for 117 yards and touchdown, and Kade Schutzmann completed 12-of-18 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown.

“I love this team and this was a great way to wrap up my career,” Harris said. “We play with a lot of pride. This was an entirely new system. It’s more pass oriented than the run-game we had before, but I thought we picked it up pretty quickly.”

The Jacks had a nice little stretch midway through the third quarter to run away from the Greyhounds. Harris scored his first touchdown of the night on a 2-yard run with 6:21 left in the third quarter. On the Greyhounds ensuing possession, Harris stepped in front of an errant Trey Parrish pass and returned the interception 35 yards to the three. On the very next offensive play, Harris scored on an 11-yard run to give Quincy a 26-0 lead and his second score in less than two minutes.

“Going out this way means a lot to me, because I’ve been playing with these guys for three years now and it’s been great,” Murphy said. “I started off the year as the quarterback, but coach needed me at wide receiver. I had an idea of the routes and how to get open because I’d thrown to receivers for so long. It was just about doing what they needed me to do.”

The defense finished the season with eight scoreless quarters. Alberto Trujillo finished up as the leading tackler on defense with a team-high 11. Juan Aguilar and Mariscal added 10 apiece.

“For me, this season was a lot of fun and I had a great time,” said first-year Quincy head coach Wade Petersen. “These last two games are really something we can build on.”
