COEUR d’ALENE — Kootenai County Clerk Jim Brannon and the Elections Department pushed hard for early registration, but with about 7,000 more voters turning up for this year’s election than the presidential election in 2012, it didn’t make much of a difference.

During early registration from late July through mid-October, 7,931 Kootenai County residents registered to vote.

I thought it was a really high number,” said Carrie Phillips, Kootenai County elections manager. “I thought our efforts were really positive.”

Then came last Tuesday. After 7,931 people had registered over almost three months, 10,301 registered on Tuesday alone.

That’s about 2,000 more election-day registrations than in 2012, Phillips said.

In total, 77,885 Kootenai County voters were registered for the Nov. 8 election, and 67,952 voted. That’s 87.25 percent turnout.

Phillips said there were long lines everywhere, but that’s expected during a presidential election.

“I haven’t gotten a feel for the longest wait time, but overall, considering the volume of people, I think everything went really well,” she said.

Of the 70 precincts in Kootenai County, Arrow Point had the fewest day-of voter registrations — 16. The precinct around Prairie View Elementary School in Post Falls saw the most, with 418.

Phillips said that despite the large number of people registering to vote on election day, things ran pretty smoothly. One thing did stick out to her, though. Of all elections, she didn’t receive nearly as many complaints this year.

“Every election is crazy and unique in its own way,” she said. “But this one was pretty clean.”
