Avalanche awareness classes planned

The Flathead Avalanche Center hosts a free avalanche awareness presentation today at Rocky Mountain Outfitter in Kalispell. The one-hour presentation begins at 6:30 p.m.
The class includes general information about avalanche hazards, how to avoid hazards and proper equipment for traveling in avalanche terrain.
Another free avalanche awareness presentation is planned at Sportsman and Ski Haus in Whitefish on Dec. 8 at 6:30 p.m.
Friends of the Flathead Avalanche Center and The Patrol Fund host the Snowball fundraiser for avalanche education on Dec. 3 at Great Northern Bar in Whitefish. The 1980s-themed party includes a costume contest and raffle prizes. Doors open at 8 p.m.
The avalanche center will offer a Ladies Introduction to Avalanches Class Jan. 5 and Jan. 7. Cost is $45. This class is offered in partnership with Flathead Valley Community College.
The course aims to help students recognize and understand obvious avalanche hazard through both classroom and field sessions.
