SANDPOINT — A Bayview woman is charged with accidentally killing one daughter and seriously injuring another in a crash last month.
Brittney Danielle Bullock is charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter and misdemeanor injury to a child. She’s further charged with failure to provide proof of insurance and failing to place her 6-year-old daughter in safety restraints.
The deadly collision occurred on Bayview Road on Sept. 6, the first day of class for public schools in North Idaho.
An affidavit filed by an Idaho State Police trooper states that Bullock was westbound when she lost control and slid off the paved, wet roadway. The 1998 Honda Accord slid over logging slash on the roadside and crashed into trees on the passenger side.
Part of the vehicle was bifurcated in the collision before rotating 180 degrees and striking another tree, the affidavit said.
Adilynn Johnson, 6, was in the rear passenger seating area and was thrown from the wreckage. She later died of her injuries. Bullock’s other daughter, 11, suffered a lacerated liver, broken ribs and a collapsed lung, court records indicate.
Bullock, 28, was interviewed by Trooper Leslie Lehman on Sept. 20, according to the affidavit. Bullock said she was looking over at her 11-year-old daughter in the front passenger seat just before losing control of the sedan.
The front tires on the car were worn, as evidenced by the tires’ built-in tread wear indicator bars. Bullock admitted that they should have been replaced but she didn’t have the money to buy them, court documents indicate. Bullock added that she was involved in a crash in Kootenai County in May and that the repairs were done by a friend rather than a licensed automotive mechanic.
Bullock insisted she was driving 25-30 mph.
“I confronted Bullock about the amount of crash force needed to shear the vehicle’s metal frame and support, and forcing the vehicle to break open. Bullock’s demeanor became defensive about the speed,” Lehman said in the affidavit.
Bullock said her children are usually in safety restraints she thought they were wearing them when they departed from Bayview that morning, the affidavit said.
Bullock is free on her own recognizance while awaiting proceedings in Bonner County Magistrate Court.
Bullock was cited for inattentive driving in Kootenai County in May. She was cited for not wearing a seatbelt in Bingham County in 2015 and for exceeding the speed limit in Nez Perce and Kootenai counties in 2013 and 2014, respectively.
All of those offenses resulted in guilty pleas, according to the Idaho Supreme Court Data Repository.
