FALL IN LOVE WITH AREA'S VAST ENTERTAINMENT OPTIONS

SANDPOINT — This is the season when entertainment options start to warm up. Things kick off tonight with a free concert by the amazing band, Mobius Riff, slated for Monarch Mountain Coffee.

Infini Gallery has a mystery afoot with its opening Friday night and Indie authors (and readers) will be glad to know the library has an all-day event just for them on Saturday. Also Saturday, the Pop-Up Theatre Co. presents a one-actor play at Evans Brothers Coffee and it’s the 9th annual Plein Air Paint-Out in Hope. On Sunday night, highly acclaimed singer-songwriter Tom Neilson plays Music For Change at DiLuna’s Café.

Thursday, Oct. 6

‘Mobius Riff Concert at Monarch Mountain Coffee

Venue: Monarch Mountain Coffee, 208 N. Fourth Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6-8 p.m., Thursday

Always sheer pleasure to hear this eclectic ensemble, even more so in an intimate, listening environment. Each member is a virtuoso, capable of playing intricately improvised lines. More important, every player is a consummate musician who weaves his magic with the rest of the band. Make your way over for some incredible music.

‘Snowden’ Film at Panida

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7:30 p.m., Thursday

Oliver Stone’s Snowden arrives for the weekend and the film keeps this famous whistleblower’s story personal and highlights the political drama that unfolded, not just the inner workings of the intelligence community. Disillusioned with the intelligence community, top contractor Edward Snowden (played masterfully by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) leaves his job at the National Security Agency. He now knows that a virtual mountain of data is being assembled to track all forms of digital communications - not just from foreign government and terrorist groups, but also from ordinary Americans.

‘Radical Reels’ Tour at Panida

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7:30 p.m., Friday

Eleven different high-energy action-sports films on the Panida screen as part of the acclaimed Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour.

Infini Gallery First Friday Art Show Opening

Venue: Infini Gallery, 214 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6-9 p.m., Friday

It’s ‘Mystery Month’ at Infini Gallery, so no artists will be announced until the night of the opening. Owner Kris Dills will be pulling from the gallery’s personal collection of artists and artwork, with a few mystery artists added for good measure.

Wayne Worthen at Pend d’Oreille Winery

Venue: Pend d’Oreille Winery, 301 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 5:30-8:30 p.m., Friday

Wayne has been playing acoustic guitar since 1970 and according to his mother, singing before he could talk. He writes and enjoys playing/singing Folk, Folk Rock, Celtic, Blues, Ragtime, Bluegrass, Classical, and Soft Jazz.

‘Indie Author Day’ at the Library

Venue: East Bonner County Library-Sandpoint Branch, 1407 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday

First annual event for Indie Authors and their readers at the East Bonner County Library Sandpoint Branch. The entire day will be filled with informative panels and presentations, made even better by live readings and performances. See the full schedule online at ebonnerlibrary.org

‘Thom Paine: Based On Nothing’ play at Evans Brothers Coffee

Venue: Evans Brothers Coffee, 524 Church St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7:30 p.m., Saturday

The Pop-Up Theatre Co. presents, ‘Thom Paine: Based On Nothing,’ which actually is based on a script by Will Eno and skillfully rendered in the hands of Sandpoint High School Theatre Department alumni and director for this production, Hunter Price. Featuring contemporary language and an idiosyncratic experience, according to the director, this play includes mature language and content, not for kids, in other words.

Admission: Free (or pay what you can).

9th Annual Plein Air Paint Out benefit in Hope

Venue: Outskirts at the Hope Marketplace, 620 Wellington Place, in Hope.

Time: Saturday; workshops start at 10 a.m.; painting from dawn to dusk; artists’ reception at 7 p.m.

This event is a chance for artists from all over the Northwest to capture the beauty of the West Cabinets as well as the lake, Lightning Creek and the Clark Fork and Bull River valleys surrounding these rugged peaks.

This year, accomplished professional and amateur artists as well as beginners are invited to “create your best post card.” Participants will be given a six-by-eight-inch canvas at registration upon which to produce what they feel will make a great postcard representation of the Peaks or surrounding area.

Registration: $25 (scholarships available for kids who want to paint with their grandparents!). All proceeds benefit the artists and Friends of Scotchman Peak Wilderness.

Daniel Mills at Pend d’Oreille Winery

Venue: Pend d’Oreille Winery, 301 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 5:30-8:30 p.m., Saturday

Daniel Mills, of the Coeur d’Alene-based band Son of Brand, is an expert fingerstyle guitarist, singer, songwriter, who when playing solo, performs original music, utilizing live looping to underscore his vocals and masterful guitar work.

‘Soiree Orientale’ Belly Dance performance at the Pearl Theater

Venue: Pearl Theater, 7160 Ash St., in Bonners Ferry.

Time: Saturday; doors and café open at 6 p.m., performance starts at 7 p.m.

Northwest Bellydance brings ‘Soiree Orientale’ to the fabulous Pearl.

Music Director Eckart Preu and the Spokane Symphony takes concertgoers on an stunning exploration of music created under the northern lights of Iceland, Finland and Russia. The journey begins with excerpts from Valgeir Sigurðsson’s score for Dreamland, an award-winning Icelandic documentary film released in 2009. Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, filled with dazzling piano effects and lush orchestration, is the perfect showcase for virtuoso pianist Inon Barnatan.

Music For Change, Tom Neilson in Concert at DiLuna’s Café

Time: Sunday; doors open at 5:30 p.m. for dinner and the concert starts at 7:30 p.m.

Enjoy an evening with award-winning singer-songwriter, Tom Neilson. Tom is a longtime environmental activist who has been dubbed the Jon Stewart of folk music. Tom provides a voice for those who believe in the power of folk music to effect change. His award-winning songs of humor and compassion have been performed in 21 countries on five continents. His lyrics are celebrated for their sophistication, political astuteness and wit. The event is sponsored by www.350Sandpoint.org and Wild Idaho Rising Tide, two local groups that provide a gathering place for people involved in the daunting job before us, to solve the climate crisis and deal with the local effects of global warming.

Mandolin Orchestra playing session

Join the mandolin craze by joining the free Mandolin Orchestra! All you need is an instrument and a very basic ability to read music and all music played is in the easy to intermediate level. Ukuleles, guitars and other fretted instruments also welcome.

Suzy Prez from KRFY 88.5 FM Panhandle Community Radio will be speaking about our Sandpoint station’s background and dedication to independent, commercial-free radio programming. Suzy will also focus on how artists can promote themselves, tell their art stories, and even be involved in broadcasting at KRFY. Joining Suzy will be Jim Healey, KRFY board member and broadcaster.
